Stonington May Ban Plastic Bags, Straws

An upcoming town meeting will allow residents to vote on the issue.

STONINGTON, CT - A town meeting Thursday will give residents the opportunity to vote on a measure that would ban plastic bags and straws. The vote will take place at 7 p.m. at Stonington High School.

According to the text of the ordinance, the Board of Selectmen created a committee in July 2018 to address the issue of plastic pollution in town water. The ad-hoc committee listed banning the use of plastic carryout bags for retail checkout of goods along with single-use plastic straws and bags as steps to take.

Several towns around the state have taken action and banned plastic bags for environmental reasons.
