Stonington PZC Responds To Public Hearing Start Times

Anyone who has ever sat through a Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission knows the meetings can last for hours. But some people are upset not about the length of the meetings but about the late start time of public hearings.

The Feb. 7, s including a review of the revised and the continuation of the proposal for a senior living housing facility at the . That public hearing was scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., after the other agenda items. However, it began two hours late prompting one local resident to voice his concerns for the start time of public hearings at the Feb. 8, board of selectman meeting.

During the selectman meeting the man said public hearings should start on time and he emailed Brom Builders the next day to apologize for the late time.

First Selectman Edward Haberek Jr., said he understood the frustration and the meetings should start as close to on time as possible and that he would speak with the planning and zoning commission about the complaint.

PZC Chairman said the commission did begin the meeting 45 minutes early because they knew there were a few agenda topics that would take time and that those items took longer than expected. 

“The PZC and staff at the Zoning Office establish an agenda that is available for review prior to the meeting,” said Chairman Rob Marseglia. “We sometimes have items on the agenda that are discussed prior to the public hearing(s). “We make every effort to start public hearings on time.  Occasionally, an agenda item requires more time than is allotted between the start of the meeting and the standard public hearing start time of 7:30pm.”
