Stonington School Board Votes To Reinstate Columbus Day
The school board voted recently to change Indigenous Peoples Day to Columbus Day after receiving criticism.
STONINGTON, CT — The school board voted to change Indigenous Peoples Day back to Columbus Day on the school calendar Thursday night by a 3-2 vote, according to The New London Day. Previously at a June 10 meeting, school officials explained that Columbus Day would be changed to Indigenous Peoples Day per a request from the district's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.
However, some board members said a public hearing should be held before making such a change. The board has heard criticism from some who opposed the change and made claims that the school system is teaching critical race theory.
The school system has since clarified in a statement that it does not teach critical race theory.
