Stonington School Evacuated Due To Gas Leak: Report

Police said a Stonington school was forced to evacuate and cancel classes due to a gas leak.

STONINGTON, CT — Police said Deans Mill School was forced to evacuate and cancel classes Monday morning due to a propane gas leak from a construction site at the school, the New London Day reported. The leak occurred after a relief cap on an exterior propane tank failed while a delivery was being made, police said.

Police said the incident occurred before most students got to school, however some students who were inside the building for before-school programs were evacuated, according to the New London Day. Students who arrived on buses at 8:30 a.m. were kept on the buses and not allowed to enter the school, police said.

School officials said the propane fueling was stopped, however the odor of gas had leaked into the school building, the New London Day reported. Students were officially dismissed at 11:30 a.m., and the school was later inspected and cleared to reopen Tuesday, police said.
