Stonington Votes On Ban Of Plastic Bags, Straws

The results of the borough's vote on plastic bags and straws is in.

STONINGTON, CT - Voters approved an ordinance to ban plastic bags and straws at a Thursday night town meeting, The New London Day reported. Residents overwhelmingly approved of the measure and the vote came after many people spoke in favor of the ban.

According to the text of the ordinance, the Board of Selectmen created a committee in July 2018 to address the issue of plastic pollution in town water. The ad-hoc committee listed banning the use of plastic carryout bags for retail checkout of goods along with single-use plastic straws and bags as steps to take.

Several towns around the state have taken action and banned plastic bags for environmental reasons.
