Strong Winds, Rain Expected to Start This Afternoon
Trees are in danger of toppling in the gusts late this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service is predicting a strong cold front moving through southeastern Connecticut later today will bring heavy rain and high winds that could be strong enough to take down trees and knock power out.
According to an NWS forecast from 9 a.m. Monday, the windy portion of the front is expected to arrive late this afternoon with sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. Because of the recent wet conditions and still-full canopies of leaves, trees may be uprooted or branches snapped by the winds.
Even though the National Weather Service is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a government agency, it is being maintained during the federal government shutdown because "the information this site provides is necessary to protect life and property," according to a message on the weather.gov website.
The system should move through overnight, and the forecast for the rest of the week looks trouble-free ... for now.
