When I first became acquainted with Reiki, I have to admit, I was a bit cynical! I had heard a lot about it, but really? Could this possibly work? Right about the time I was puzzling over this, Cynthia Siswick, a Reiki Master in Westerly, was to be at the Westerly Hospital, giving a talk and 3 minute demonstrations to everyone who attended. So, I figured…why not go? I had nothing to lose. What I didn’t know then was that I had everything to gain! I experienced my first Reiki treatment that night, and much to my amazement, my left foot, which up until that point in time had felt nothing for many months, was warm and I felt my foot inside my shoe! No small thing in my life at that time! Of course, I wanted more of this for my other foot, my hands…the list was endless! I made an appt with Cynthia right then and there. After my 5th or 6th session with her, I knew this was what I wanted to be doing. I had a need to give back what I had been given by so many. About the time I was thinking I would do this, my Kinesiologist (and now one of my Kinesiology teachers) pointed me in that direction with no knowledge of the events preceding this most recent visit with her. That told me I was heading the right way. I called Cynthia, arranged to be taught Level 1. I felt I had been introduced into a new realm of existence. It seemed the potential for healing was incredible. I wanted to share it with everyone. Actually, I wanted to heal the whole world! I went on to complete Level 2, and eventually became a Reiki Master myself.
It is impossible to “explain” Reiki to someone ingrained in western thought and medicine. Actually, when you get down to it, you cannot explain it at all; it has to be experienced. Speed ahead to present time : A very dear friend of mine was very much in need of Reiki. I was told that “I do not believe in something that I cannot see”. Ok…we all think differently. I dropped the subject. Months later, the same friend asked was I still doing my “magic stuff “on people and animals. I said yes. Sheepishly, I was asked could I help? I replied with we can only try together. 3 months after Reiki treatment began, numbers were improving, and I was asked to continue doing whatever you are doing, please! The added benefit of a feeling of perfect peace and joy when on my table made a believer out of her right from the start, but to see the numbers improving…well…that was simply short of a miracle. But it had to be experienced to be believed! I need to add here that the peace and relaxation equaled no stress, giving her body a chance to remember that it knew how to heal itself with a bit of assistance!
The whole point of “asking” someone if they would like Reiki is to give them the choice to say “no.” There’s something about the human experience that sometimes involves needing our pain. We hold onto it tightly enough. Maybe we are afraid to let it go because we don’t know what we will find in its place. Maybe our pain defines us and we wouldn’t know who we are without it. Whatever it is holding us in that place, we cannot be made to give it up. We have to be ready to want it gone.

People have a tendency to put their pain in neat little boxes and then pack them away, especially if the pain has been long term. I did. As part of the healing process, Reiki can be an internal windstorm, making a mess of everything. This can be more disturbing than healing to the person not yet ready. To receive Reiki, one has to be able to “receive.” Sometimes, we are just not in that spot. And only the person can make that distinction. The Reiki Practitioner cannot.
So when someone says No to Reiki, it could be because of ignorance of Reiki itself, which education or experiencing it will help. Or it could be they are not yet ready for the change that healing can bring. And we must respect that. It’s not about the Practitioner and their wishes; it’s about the person and their needs. Until they are ready to handle the healing, they are not ready for Reiki.
