Drunk Stratford Driver Hits Several Cars on Devon Bridge, Flees; Several Injuries Reported: Police

Police say the Route 1 bridge connecting Milford and Stratford was closed for hours as emergency responders attended to the injured.

And now we know why the Route 1 or Washington Bridge connecting Milford and Stratford over the Housatonic River was closed Saturday evening for hours.

The answer comes from the Stratford Police Department.

Police say at 7 p.m. Bertrand Tremel Jr., 44 of 318 Jackson Avenue in Stratford, allegedly struck several vehicles on the Devon Bridge (Washington Bridge). Police say he was allegedly intoxicated at the time.

Tremel then fled the scene of the accident which involved three other vehicles, police said. Officers were able to locate Tremel’s GMC pickup truck which was abandoned. The truck was found on Sheridan Street in Stratford. A police K-9 tracked Tremel to his home and Tremel was identified as the driver by witnesses, police said.

Tremel was taken into custody and charged with operating under the influence, evading responsibility, following too close, driving with a suspended license, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, misuse of a marker plate, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and interfering with an officer.

He was held on a $25,000 dollar bond and is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Court on May 18.

Several Injuries were reported during the accident, police said.
