Fire Displaces Several Families in Stratford

American Red Cross assisting 12 people; Stratford and Bridgeport Fire Departments worked together in extinguishing blaze on Barnum Avenue.

The Stratford Fire Department received assistance from the Bridgeport Fire Department in extinguishing a blaze at a three-story apartment house on Barnum Avenue on Tuesday night.

“The two departments worked in harmony to extinguish the blaze and prevent any fire extension to the inside,” Fire Marshal Brian Lampart told the Connecticut Post.

When fire officials arrived at building, at 1995 Barnum Ave., heavy smoke was coming from the house and heavy fire was reported from the rear of the third floor of the house, according to the Stratford Fire Department’s Facebook page.

The American Red Cross is helping 12 people – three adults and nine children in two families – that were displaced in the fire.

The families were provided help with emergency housing, food, clothing and baby needs, according to a press release. Stuffed animal toys were provided to the children. Red Cross volunteers Ted Bresky, Debbie Hunt Scribner and Mike Vincelli responded to assist the families.

The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits containing personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, shaving supplies and other items a family might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire.
