It’s Called SOCIAL Media, Not SALES Media

It’s called social media, not sales media and for good reason. It’s about connecting with people who are or will become advocates for your brand. It’s about meeting other business owners who can help build your brand and your business. It’s about connecting you or your brand to the community online and in-person.

Social media shouldn’t be about sales.

One of the biggest mistakes I see other businesses making on social media is to be constantly or frequently posting about their products and services. Think about it from the perspective of those looking at your page or feed – Would you want to be sold something every day? Probably not. In fact, if you’re like a lot of consumers, you will unlike the page, stop following or at least stop paying attention.

You don’t want people to stop paying attention to your brand.

Create conversations. Have a voice for your brand that is positive and contributes to the community. Share the stories of others and provide testimonials of others about your brand. These are all ways to attract people to your business without selling them anything. You’re being engaging and asking them to engage.

I like to use the jewelry example – Rather than telling people they need the ABC necklace because it is the newest trend, show them how to use the necklace to create a professional or seasonal look. It’s a sales post either way but I guarantee the second way will get your business noticed in a more positive light.
