Happy New Year!
As a Life Coach, I strive to help others achieve a healthy work/life balance.
What is Life Balance? I covered some useful points in my article, LIFE BALANCE-PART 1
Balance
Unless you are unusually gifted with super time-management skills and possess a high level of self-awareness; the concept of WORK/LIFE Balance is challenging for most of us. Work too much and you feel overwhelmed and “out of sorts”. Work too little and you may feel inadequate, not challenged and under-stimulated. Same goes for your personal life. Finding that magical recipe of mind and body enhancing social activities, with meaningful work can be a tedious juggling act.Reignite what floats your boat
Whatever it is(or whom) floats your boat is as different as hairstyles. Take some time to identify what your passion(s) are. If you put your energy into fruitful and satisfying hobbies, interests that are personal to you; rejuvenation can occur. Reignite what is most intimate to you. Even if you spend only 5-10 minutes per day thinking about what is most important; you will start to experience a stronger sense of balance.
Exercise, exercise, exercise(mental)
In Part 1 of this article series, I mentioned how important physical exercise is to your mental and actual health. This goes for your mind as well. Be clever and ponder different ways you can flex some brain muscle. Turn off the TV or computer and let your mind quiet down a bit. Then, choose a program that involves figuring out a complex plot, etc...This will force you to use different parts of your brain. Use a site like Lumosity to train your brain;much like you would your legs or arms.
Allow yourself to engage in “light” activities
We all have demanding personal and career lives. Striving for excellence in all we do is a great way to feel adequate, secure and a renewed sense of confidence. However, so much of our lives is heavy and dense; we need to stabilize with light, (almost) mindless tasks/actions. Give yourself permission to be silly: dance with your kids, watch a silly sitcom that doesn’t require a lot of analysis, etc...The point here is to engage in gentle and non-demanding activities; this will lighten the load and seriousness of your daily responsibilities.
Surround yourself with supportive people
There is a good deal of research that demonstrates positive, healthy social interactions with others promote good physical, spiritual and emotional health. Making connections with others, from casual to deep, can give you a sense of belonging and happiness. Avoid spending time with those who are perpetually pessimistic, or debbie downers;only positive people with help lift your spirits.
Life/Work Balance is different for everyone. A skillful coach will determine a unique approach for each client;depending on their age and lifestyle.
