Obituary: David R. Arkilander, 73, of Stratford

David R. Arkilander, 73, of Stratford, beloved husband for 54 years of Bonnie Arkilander, died on Monday, March 27, 2017 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford after a long illness.

Mr. Arkilander was born in Ashtabula, Ohio to the late Raymond and Lula Arkilander. He was a graduate of Bunnell High School and the Bridgeport Engineering Institute.

David had worked as an engineer at Sikorsky Aircraft and was also self-employed in the tool and die industry. He was an avid sailor and a member of the Housatonic Boat Club. David enjoyed many outdoor activities including skiing, tennis and race cars. His greatest pleasure in life was the time spent with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two beloved children, Timothy Arkilander of Toledo, OH and Alison Pomper and her husband, Andrew, of Newton, MA; three loving grandchildren, Joshua, Jack and Lillie Pomper; one brother, William Arkilander and his wife, Kathy, of FL; two brothers-in-law, Phil Herron of NC and Harold Edmonds and his wife, Ana Maria, of Old Lyme; and nieces and nephews, Cindy, April, Michelle, Kelly, Jeff, Lisa and Matthew. He was predeceased by his sister, Susan Herron.

Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Pistey Funeral Home, 2155 Main Street, Stratford. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 9:15 am at the funeral home and at 10 a.m. at St. Mark Church with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be private and at a later date. Due to the Lenten season, live plant arrangements would be preferred or contributions in David's memory to St. Mark Church, 500 Wigwam La., Stratford, CT 06614.
