Photos from Corn Husk Doll Workshop Sponsored by Local DAR Chapter

In recognition of National American Indian Heritage Month, a Corn Husk Doll Workshop was conducted at the Shelton Community Center on Saturday, November 16th, 2013, sponsored by the Sarah Riggs Humphreys - Mary Silliman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Wendy Cole Mawhinney ("Sun Woman"), Instructor, had this to say:

"A delightful group of young ladies joined us on our journey back in time.  They all took a girl's Native American name, while we explored together the lifestyle and rich culture of local Native peoples and their important influence on all of our lives today (such as in usage of words, names, foods, toys, and games). We discussed the importance of corn and the many uses for every part of the corn plant ... including the use of the corn husks for making dolls!

The importance of respect, honor, and of not being wasteful (a form of respect) are timely lessons for young people today."

The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence.  Any woman over 18 who can prove an ancestor served in the American Revolution is a prospective member.  For more information on the DAR, visit http://www.sarahriggshumphreysDAR.org or call Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter Regent Christy Hendrie at 203.261.2628.
