Pig Roast Success!

The 8th grade students spent the first few weeks of school completing a service project to benefit Save the Children’s humanitarian efforts in Syria.  The project was in two parts: the first part was to raise awareness and the second part was to raise funds.  The students were placed into groups and each group was responsible to create a PowerPoint on the child refugee crisis in Syria.  In order to complete this project, the students had to research the causes of the current civil war and the effects of this war on vulnerable populations.  The students then presented their information to each class at St. James School.

In conjunction with their research, the students sponsored a pie in the face contest.   Teachers willingly agreed to be “pied” for a good cause.  Each vote cost $1.00.  The three teachers who brought in the most votes were rewarded with a pie in the face at the 4th annual Father’s Club Pig Roast.  Due to the 8th graders informational talks, the fundraiser was a great success.  In fact one 5th grade teacher noted that after the 8th grade students presented to her class, one of her students approached her and said, “I have a dollar that I was going to use to buy a soda, but now I am going to give it to the children of Syria.”

In all the students raised almost $450 and everyone enjoyed watching Miss Bostley, Mr. Yerina and Mr. Gieryng take a pie in the face.
