St. Mark School Names Science Fair Winners
Seven students will now compete in statewide competition at Quinnipiac University on March 15-19.
St. Mark School held its Annual Science Fair on February 16, 2011. The event featured exhibits from more than 75 students. All students in grades 5-8 participated in the fair. Students were challenged to identify a problem, formulate a hypothesis and then follow scientific method to prove their theory.
The students presented their projects to a panel of experts from the science industry. The panel included the Head of the Science Department at St. Joseph High School and Bunnell High School, Engineers from Sikorsky Corporation, an Astronomer and a Medical Research Scientist. The judges were very impressed by all the students’ exhibits. The event was facilitated by St. Mark School science teache, Mr. Flynn.
Fifth grade winner, Olivia Naimoli, compared the effects of natural aloe versus aloe enhanced commercial products. Sixth grade winner, Alexandra Sciallo, used geometric formulas to measure the blind spot on the human eye. Seventh grade winner, Cheyenne Perez, researched the recycling and the biodegradable process. Eighth grade winner, Emily Robertson, compared the frequency of Muon Strikes with Helioshperic and Atmospheric Variables.
Last year, St. Mark School sent Emily Robertson (a seventh grader at the time) to the Connecticut State Science Fair Special Awards Ceremony. Emily won six awards and placed 5th in the state for her physical science project.
This year, seven St. Mark students have registered for the State Fair. The 63rd Annual Connecticut State Science Fair will take place March 15-19, 2011, at Quinnipiac University in Hamden.
