Stratford jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after three innings, increased it to a 7-4 lead after six innings before New Fairfield gutted out rallies to even the game on those two occasions.

Stratford’s bottom of the seventh proved to be exciting for the home fans as sophomore Zach Rider drew a leadoff walk, was sacrifice bunted to second by senior Ron Kerkes, and after senior J.J. Romatzick was intentionally walked, junior Jake Kszywanos made the opposition pay by belting a fastball opposite field over the right fielder’s head for the game winning walk-off double, scoring Rider.

Junior Joe Booska started for Stratford, was relieved by junior Ben Petrie in the third, and Romatzick handled the seventh inning and earned the win.

Kerkes went 2-for-2 with two walks two runs scored and one RBI, while Petrie finished with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Newtown 3, Stratford 1: Newtown snapped Stratford’s four-game winning streak in a hard-fought game last Thursday. Stratford ace Brady Knorr started, battled, and turned in five quality innings allowing only six hits, two unearned runs while striking out five and walking one.

Stratford had chances early to get out on top as both in the first and second innings they had the lead-off batter on second with no outs but never got either runner past third. J.J. Romatzick relieved Brady in the bottom of the sixth and allowed one unearned run on one hit.

Romatzick also chipped in with two hits with one stolen base and one run scored. Jake Kszywanos singled, doubled and had one RBI. Cam Kelemen came off the bench with a pinch-hit line drive single to right center.

Stratford was plagued by early strikeouts, baserunning miscues and some defensive lapses.
