Stratford DTC advocate for a "fair deal" to Stop & Shop employees

The Stratford Democratic Town Committee advocates for UCFW labor union's employees to receive a fair deal.

On April 11, 2019, over 31,000 Stop & Shop workers walked off the job in protest of the company's bad faith negotiations with the United Commercial Food Workers union. Despite being the #1 operating grocery chain in New England, Stop & Shop has offered little to its store employees but cuts to take home pay, increases in the cost of healthcare benefits, and has undermined the pensions of people who have worked there for decades. This includes the hardworking women and men at the Stratford Stop & Shop, who are members of the UCFW Local 919. They want to make these cuts despite the company reporting a $2.1 BILLION profit in 2018, receiving a $225 million tax cut and, just yesterday, shareholders of Stop & Shop's parent company, Ahold Delhaize, voting to give themselves an 11% raise in dividends. That payout will amount to about $880 million.

Hardworking Stop & Shop workers are facing an uphill battle for what is fair and right.

We're calling on those that believe in the "right to a fair deal" to support the picket line at Stop & Shop in the following ways:

3) If you have an hour or two, STAND WITH THE WORKERS ON THE PICKET LINE! No experience necessary...just bring your comfy shoes, ask the good folks there for a sign, and let customers coming to the store know that crossing the line isn't cool and there are plenty of sales going on at Shop Rite across the street.

4) BRING FOOD AND DRINKS! Pizza, donuts, sandwiches, coffee, water...standing outside in the cold and fighting for your lives for hours at a time requires lots of nourishment!

5) TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY - chances are, we all know someone who works there. They're the people who write the names of our kids on birthday cakes, who slice our deli meat just the way we like it, and who clean up on Aisle 6 when we drop that jar of apple sauce. They're our mothers and fathers...our grandparents and teenage kids. They're our neighbors, and they need everyone to know why they're fighting.

6) Follow their progress on social media! On Facebook, you can follow the Support Shop & Stop Workers page at https://www.facebook.com/supportstopandshopworkers/, or on Twitter at @stopdontshop. You can also keep track of what UCFW Local 919 is doing at https://www.facebook.com/group...

7) Lastly, and most importantly, DON'T CROSS THE PICKET LINE! Please do your shopping elsewhere...at least until the UCFW and Stop & Shop negotiate a fair deal for all employees.
