Stratford Election 2021: Immacula Jo Cann Running For Mayor

STRATFORD, CT — The 2021 municipal election is heating up in Stratford with plenty of races on the ballot.

Voters will head to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 2 and cast their ballots for the position of mayor, along with seats on the Town Council, Board of Education, Planning and Zoning and more.

Stratford Patch asked candidates to answer questions about their campaigns and will be publishing candidate profiles as election day draws near.

Democrat Immacula Jo Cann is running for election as mayor of Stratford.

Occupation: Doctorate in Nursing Practice, Practicing and Teaching Psychiatric Nurse

Family: Husband Greg, four adult children, five grandchildren

Experience: 25+ years as a nurse administrator and teacher, managing million-dollar budgets, complex staffing requirements, and fulfillment of patient needs.

The single biggest issue in town is ______, and I plan to do this about it:

The economy. Under our current mayor, Stratford's economy has been left in shambles and on the "distressed municipality" list for two years in a row. I have a five point plan that will leverage our wonderful natural advantages to grow our economy, generate new jobs, and support families to get our town moving again. Critical differences between me and my opponent:

Stratford's charter clearly lays out the responsibilities for our mayor, and administration and management are chief among them. I have worked as an administrator and supervisor for over 25 years in the nursing profession. It's what I do.

But the biggest difference between me and my opponent is that I have a plan to turn Stratford's economy around. We've recognized some hard truths about our dire situation as a member of the state's "distressed municipality" list. We've lost over 1,000 jobs, had 300 families leave, and taxes have increased as much as $4,000 for some families. We can change that. If we want a better Stratford, it's time to elect better leaders.

Accomplishments:

Successfully managed millions in budgets at South Central Rehab

Invited to join faculty of Yale University's nursing school

Volunteered for multiple medical missions to Haiti and Peru

Participated in complex labor negotiations as a member of SEIU 1199's Contract Committee

Volunteered in Stratford public schools for 30 years

Organized multiple fundraises for CT Literacy Volunteers

Other issues:

You can't have multiple number one priorities. So I'm saying very clearly: my number one priority is Stratford's economy. Everything in life starts with a family's ability to put food on their table and a roof over their heads. Until we've lowered taxes and secured a true Stratford turnaround, that is my focus.

What else would you like voters to know about you?

I decided to run for mayor because of you, the residents of Stratford. My door is always open, and will continue to be as the leader of our town.
