Mayor David Chess said that along River Road, Stratford has a 100-year-old utility tower that “must come down and will be replaced by a new monopole.”
“The CT Department of Transportation and Eversource will be conducting the new monopole construction project in two phases, which means River Road will be closed to traffic twice this year,” Chess wrote in a post on Facebook. “This project has been in the works for years and will require a detour from Main Street to Main Street Putney as River Road will be closed.”

The first phase of the project will begin at 5 a.m. on Monday, May 4, and conclude on Sunday, June 14. Detour signs will be in place, and traffic signals will be changed at Main Street Putney (north) and River Road to improve traffic flow.
River Road will reopen to regular traffic on June 15 and remain open until Aug. 16.
“We are working closely with the businesses affected by this project, and our Dispatch, Police, Fire, and EMS Departments have a plan to keep operations as smooth as possible for everyone impacted,” Chess wrote. “During this project, a crane will be raised to install the monopoles on the west side of River Road. Wires will then be transferred across the river to Milford.
“From August 17 to September 19, River Road will be closed to traffic for the last phase of the project.”
