Victoria Soto Remembered on 30th Birthday

Soto died while protecting her students during the Sandy Hook school shooting. The school named in her honor was decorated.

Nov. 4 marks what would have been Victoria Soto’s 30th birthday.

Soto died in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012 while protecting her students. She was a first-grade teacher.

Soto is a Stratford native. The town recently opened a new school on Birdeye Street named after her. A mural on the inside of the building highlights the words “Be Kind,” which Soto asked of others.

The school was decorated on Nov. 4 with green and pink balloons attached to flamingos.

The 3rd annual Vicki Soto 5K run is scheduled for Nov. 7 in Stratford. There are more than 2,600 registered participants, according to a page dedicated in her memory.

She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal along with fellow Sandy Hook educators Rachel Davino, Anne Marie Murphy and Lauren Rousseaum Mary Sherlach and Dawn Hochsprung.

A scholarship was created in her honor for Stratford High School and Bunnell High School graduating students who plan to pursue a career in education.
