SUFFIELD, CT — Suffield police are warning residents about a scam call in which someone appeared to spoof the department’s phone number and pretend to be the police chief.
The department said a Suffield resident contacted Chief Richard Canon after receiving a call from a number that looked like it came from the Suffield Police Department.
The caller claimed to be Canon and said police were investigating the resident’s immigration status, according to the department. The resident ended the call and contacted Canon directly to report what happened.
Police said the Suffield Police Department will never call someone about an inquiry into their immigration status.
Officials said calls like this often lead to scammers demanding money for a fake application process or threatening arrest or deportation.
Anyone who receives a call like this should not send money, should end the conversation and should report the incident to the Suffield Police Department, police said.
