Rabid Raccoon Captured in West Suffield

Police warn residents not to approach wild animals after two dogs were bitten by a raccoon.

SUFFIELD, CT — A raccoon captured in West Suffield Monday tested positive for rabies, according to police.

The Suffield Police Department received two separate reports of dogs being bitten by a raccoon in the area of Copper Hill Road and side streets off of Griffin Road Monday. A raccoon was brought to the state lab for testing and tested positive for the rabies virus.

On its Facebook page, Suffield police cautioned residents about the dangers of approaching wild animals.

"We'd like to remind residents to never approach wild animals, especially those that look to be sick or injured. If you notice an animal exhibiting odd behavior, please call the police department at (860) 668-3870. Ensure that your pets are up to date with vaccines, and keep them on a leash when outside."
