Suffield Police Hire New Captain

SUFFIELD, CT— James Canon Jr., Esq., joins the Suffield Police Department and assumes the position of captain. Canon brings over 20 years of experience with the Connecticut State Police, specializing in labor relations. Before retiring in 2017 he held the position of Lieutenant Colonel, Commanding Officer of the Bureau of Professional Standards and Support. He most recently served as the Executive Director of Internal Investigations & Security for Hartford Public Schools. “Captain Canon’s extensive background is well matched to the current needs within the department,” noted Chief Richard Brown, “I am confident that he will be a tremendous asset and a key figure in making ongoing improvements.”

While at the Connecticut State Police, Canon’s leadership roles included Captain/Major, Commanding Officer, Labor Relations Unit; Lieutenant, Chief of Staff, Office of Field Operations; and Lieutenant, Commanding Officer, Troop B. He received specialized training at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA in 2016. Canon graduated with a Juris Doctor from Western New England College and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Westfield State College.

Police Commission Chairman Kenneth Pascoe shared Brown’s enthusiasm adding, “The commission is fully supportive of this hire, Captain Canon came highly recommended and we anticipate great things from him.” First Selectman Melissa M.
