What That New Flag Outside Suffield Police Headquarters Represents

Officials say the flag's symbolism is intended to represent both service and sacrifice.

SUFFIELD, CT — Drivers passing the Suffield Police Department this week may have noticed a new flag flying outside the station.

According to the department, the flag was designed by Suffield officers and has been approved by the town as the agency’s official flag.

Police said the design is filled with symbolism tied to both the profession and the department itself.

The flag’s nine stripes represent the “Nine Principles of Policing” established by Sir Robert Peel in 1829, which the department described as foundational values that still help guide law enforcement today.

Its six stars stand for what the department identified as its core leadership traits: responsibility, empathy, adaptability, communication, respect and decisiveness.

Police said the stars are arranged in a triangular formation meant to reflect the folded American flag presented to the family of a fallen officer.

The flag’s blue, white and yellow color scheme was drawn from Suffield’s town colors and the department’s official patch, according to the post.
