Every July 11 the convenience retailer observes its birthday and other company milestones. As part of the celebration, the company has been offering free Slurpees for 10 years. 7-Eleven, the first convenience store, began in 1927 when a Southland Ice Company employee started selling bread, milk and eggs from an ice dock as a convenience to customers. Since then, “convenience” has become a big business. Today there are close to 9,300 7-Eleven stores in North America and more than 46,800 worldwide.
Though it is officially known as 7-Eleven Day, most know it as free Slurpee Day. That tradition started in 2002.

“7-Eleven Day, or free Slurpee Day, gets bigger and more popular every year,” said Joe DePinto, 7-Eleven president and CEO, in a press release. “This year we expect to give away 7 million Slurpee drinks, more than ever before, beating last year’s offer by 2 million. On July 11th, we at 7-Eleven will recognize our 85th year as the retail leader of convenience, and it will mark the 45th birthday of our iconic drink - the Slurpee. But the day is also when we do something special to thank customers for their support and welcome new guests.”
You might want to get there early, however. The 7.11 ounce cups are a special size and once they run out they are out of free Slurpees. You also might want to call ahead and make sure your nearest 7-Eleven is participating.
