Hobby Beekeeping

Do you love to taste that wonderfully sweet golden honey bees produce? Have you ever wondered how to start honeybee hives of your own? The Killingworth Library will offer a presentation on hobby beekeeping on Tuesday, September 25^th at 7pm.

People keep honeybees for all sorts of different reasons.  The most obvious is to be able to eat that wonderful golden honey they produce.  But people do also keep honeybees for the pollination they provide our flowers and plants, for the stress-relief of spending time watching them fly to and from their hive on their journeys to the flowers, and also because people notice that there aren’t as many honeybees around as there used to be, and they miss them.

Whatever the reason is, it is possible for nearly everyone to have a hive or two of their very own!  Ned Farrell of The Bee Happy Co. will show how easy it is to start a honeybee hive, and how fascinating is the inner workings of the hive. A little honeybee knowledge and the proper equipment is all you need.

Ned Farrell is a beekeeper with over twenty years experience, including working with African (“killer”) bees for the Peace Corps in Paraguay, South America.  Ned now combines the higher-tech beekeeping management style common to big honey producers with appropriate tech, easy to use equipment.  This combination makes it simple and fun for anyone to learn how to care for their very own bees.  Ned owns and operates The Bee Happy Co. with his wife Sharyn.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A. Raw unpasteurized honey, all-natural beeswax lip balm, rolled beeswax candles and Bee Happy Honey Gift Baskets will be offered for sale.
