Haddam Firefighters Respond to Smoky Basement

An overheated sump pump was the cause of the smoke, according to the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company.

Smoke from an overheated sump pump was to blame for a smoked out basement on Dec. 11. At around 7 p.m., Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to reports of basement smoke at a house on Dublin Hill Road.

Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to investigate. Not finding an active fire, portable fans were used to eject smoke from the residence. The pumps are used to remove water that has accumulated in a sump pit, usually found in basements, to keep a home’s foundation dry.

With high volumes of precipitation in recent days, these pumps are running more frequently. The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
