On Jan. 6, Haddam Volunteer Fire Company provided mutual aid at a three-alarm fire at Calamari Recycling in Essex. Firefighters helped shuttle water with Tanker 2-13. The fire, which ignited in a warehouse containing cardboard and other paper items, burned for more than 30 hours. (View photos at https://www.facebook.com/media/set/…)
At 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 15, HVFCo. was called to an out-of-control permitted brush fire on Foot Hills Road. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a fire estimated to be about 150 feet wide. Firefighters used the booster line on Utility Truck 7-13 to contain the fire. Firefighters stayed on scene for an hour and ensured the fire was at a safe level.
At 3 p.m. on Jan. 21, HVFCo. responded to a vehicle fire on Russell Road. Firefighters used dry chemicals to extinguish the fire, which started in the dashboard and extended into the cab portion of the vehicle. The driver was not injured.

At 1:45 p.m. on Jan. 23, HVFCo. was called to a motor vehicle accident on Hidden Lake Road. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a single vehicle on its roof, wedged between two trees. Firefighters secured the car with cribbing. The operator of the vehicle was evaluated on scene and refused treatment. The incident is under investigation by Connecticut State Police.
Shortly after 9 p.m. on Jan. 25, HVFCo. responded to a motor vehicle accident on Bridge Road in Tylerville. A driver heading eastbound towards East Haddam lost control of her vehicle and swerved into the westbound lane. A driver heading westbound witnessed the vehicle swerving, so he pulled to the side of the road and braced for impact. His vehicle was struck head-on. Following the collision, a passerby stopped and helped the female driver exit her vehicle. The driver was taken to Middlesex Hospital via Haddam Volunteer Ambulance with injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was evaluated on scene and refused medical treatment. Haddam Fire rerouted traffic through Camp Bethel Road for about an hour.

In January, members participated in blood-borne pathogen training, required for anyone responding to calls. Many members also took CPR training.
