Is 'Gently-Used' Sports Equipment Safe for Kids?

East Haddam-Haddam Patch Moms Council Gives You the Scoop

Question:  My child is such a picky eater. What can I do?

Answer:  According to the Mayo Clinic, the worst things to do are force or bribe your child to eat. Instead, keep a regular meal schedule, do not let them eat or drink too close to mealtime, avoid any distractions during meals such as television or books, and slowly keep introducing new foods. The website recommends letting your child help with the grocery shopping and meal preparation to get them involved and invested in the whole eating process. Good luck!

Question: We get a lot of hand-me-down sporting equipment. How do I know if it's safe?

Answer:  It’s always a good idea to pass gently-used toys and sporting equipment along to younger players, but you do need to double check everything to be sure things are in good working order. Some equipment is pretty obvious and others may need an expert opinion. For instance, you can take bikes in for a tune-up at most bike shops, or ice skates in to a sharpener for an opinion on condition. You should always purchase safety equipment such as helmets and knee pads brand new to be sure they provide the maximum protection possible (and are under warranty).

Question:  My in-laws live far away and do not get to spend a lot of time with my children.  What can we do that is extra special when they visit next?

Answer: Consider letting your in-laws have a special day with just the kids. They can take the kids to a park or museum and you can enjoy the house to yourself! If your in-laws are up for it, let them take the grandchildren to an upcoming play, such as “The Wizard of Oz” coming to The Garde Arts Theater in New London at the end of March.
