There is growing enthusiasm in town as residents learn that Higganum is getting its first commercial gym: HK Fitness. You may have seen some action in the center of Higganum as the space formerly occupied by Higganum Physical Therapy is being completely renovated for a commercial gym. The new facility will include new state of the art fitness equipment including a cardio deck with treadmills, ellipticals and bikes, free weights, selectorized strength equipment, as well as a changing room and shower for those who are on the go. Residents will love the convenience of the key card access between the hours of 4am and 11pm seven days a week, as well as the convenient location right off of routes 81 and 154 at 23 Killingworth Road. HK Fitness is slated to open in late March / early April.
HK Fitness is owned and operated by Higganum residents who have worked to bring health and fitness to the area for years. Merle Mckenzie, who has twenty years of experience in the fitness industry, and his wife Diana, a school teacher at Haddam Elementary School, enjoy having a “meaningful part in changing lives” citing, “if you change a person’s health and fitness, you change their life.” The Mckenzies currently own Crossfit Ironworks in town and they have brought fitness not only to adults through their Crossfit and Boot Camp programs, but also to children and teenagers through their Ninja Fitness and Teen Strength and Conditioning programs, respectively. Their own two school aged children, Grace and Jake, also play a role in promoting fitness in Higganum as they have grown to be a part of the family business.
