Two Bright Spots in a Tough Economy: The Saybrook at Haddam and Safe Harbor Memory Care

The Saybrook at Haddam has hit its stride as one of the most desirable assisted living retirement communities for both seniors who are independent and for those who may need a helpful hand.

With 95 percent occupancy and the opening of a brand new, specialized memory care unit, is experiencing tremendous growth and success despite a challenging statewide economic environment. Two-and-a-half years after a new management team was put in place, The Saybrook at Haddam has hit its stride as one of the most desirable assisted living retirement communities for both seniors who are independent and for those who may need a helpful hand. Now, through the opening of the Safe Harbor Memory Care neighborhood in January 2012, it also serves those suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia or other memory-related disorders.

The upswing began shortly after The Saybrook at Haddam was purchased at auction in 2009 (when the occupancy rate was less than 18 percent), when Kathy Ryan stepped in as executive director and Dave Downey became the director of marketing and community relations. Their combined senior living experience of more than 50 years was crucial to quickly identifying ways for the community to excel in this competitive market.
