2 Sex-Ed Books Challenged At Old Lyme Library: Report

A group is asking the library to remove two books that it claims don't align with community values.

OLD LYME, CT — A group of community members has asked the Old Lyme-Phoebe Griffing Noyes Library to remove two books dealing with sex education, according to NBC CT. One resident said that one of the books has "no educational value" and is "encouraging pornography."

However, some are concerned about the challenge and said that banning such books can be a slippery slope, according to NBC CT.

The two books are “Let’s Talk About It: The Teen’s Guide to Sex, Relationships, and Being a Human" by Erica Moen and “You Know, Sex: Bodies, Gender, Puberty, And Other Things" by Cory Silverberg.

A letter opposing the book ban was signed by more than 400 residents, according to The Hartford Courant. The letter states that those signing "assert our strong opposition to any such censorship in our community."

The books are under review by the library's board, which will meet July 11 to discuss the issue, The Hartford Courant reported.

“Let’s Talk About It” was also targeted in a book ban attempt in Fairfield last year. The library's Board of Trustees unanimously voted to keep the book in the Fairfield Library's Teen Section without any restrictions.

Several local parents had sought to have the book removed or to restrict access to it, arguing that the book's themes were inappropriate for teens.
