Dear Family,

This month our Powerful Wordof the month is “determination.”Determination refers to aperson’s attitude towards hisgoals as well as his ability totake the initiative to achievethose goals. It involvesa combination of skills, knowledge, drive and belief inoneself which enable a personto engage in goal-directedaction.Determined people typicallyhave a clear understanding oftheir strengths, limitations, interests and needs. They usethis understanding to makeimportant decisions about theirgoals, evaluate their progress, make adjustments, and followthrough to completion. Whenpeople are determined tocomplete a job or achieve agoal they don’t allow weakness, setbacks or challenges to deterthem.

Determination in many wayscan trump talent. As SophiaLoren once said; “Gettingahead in a difficult professionrequires avid faith in yourself. That is why some peoplewith mediocre talent, but withgreat inner drive, go muchfurther than people with vastlysuperior talent.” When peopleare committed, focused andyes, determined, they can puttheir level of talent to work andsurpass those who have talentbut lack drive.Research tells us that we canhelp our children developdetermination and grit bypromoting a learning andgrowth mind-set. Our childrenneed to learn that their abilityto succeed as well as theircompetency grow when theyshow consistent effort. Thateffort must remain constanteven when the goal ischallenging.

We can also helpchildren develop determinationby teaching them goal-settingand goal-getting strategies. Wewant them to be able to declaretheir goals and cope with theobstacles that may stand in theirway. We thank you for your support. You are pivotal in helping tomake our school one of thebest Martial Arts and personaldevelopment centers in theworld. We look forward to partneringwith you on our Powerful Word,Determination, this month. Here’s to your success!
