Driver Receives Suspended Sentence for Charges in Fatal Old Lyme Crash
A crash due to a disabled car in 2014 resulted in the death of a passenger.

NEW LONDON, CT – A driver whose passenger was killed in a four-car crash pleaded no contest to reckless endangerment Thursday in New London Superior Court, The Day reported.
Evelyn Rivera, 37, was given a fully suspended one-year prison sentence and one-year conditional discharge as part of a plea deal, according to The Day. Rivera’s car was struck by a box truck on Jan. 6, 2014 in Old Lyme, causing a four-car crash and killing 58-year old passenger Nydia Vargas.
The two had been traveling to Mohegan Sun from New Haven when Rivera’s car began to malfunction twice, The Day reported. Rivera had taken it to an East Lyme mechanic, who had advised her it was most likely unsafe to travel back to New Haven in it.
