The most common complaint new clients have is that they have been bored by their prior exercise routine. This boredom makes it difficult for them to remain engaged in their program and they cite extreme difficulty in staying engaged in a fitness program long term. Getting on an elliptical or treadmill workout after workout becomes tiresome and boring quickly for most people. One of our main goals is to eliminate this boredom and keep our program exciting and engaging to keep our members interested. So how can you do this?
1. Find an activity that you enjoy. If you love running, tennis, biking, etc...spend your time doing it. One will be more likely to continue their exercise program if they are doing what they enjoy.
2. Try new activities. Maybe it is an adult baseball program or completing a new challenge such as a 5k run or a triathlon. We have a client that joined a mens baseball league this past summer and it inspired him to regain his previous fitness.
3. Get a friend to exercise with you. Having an accountability partner/friend can be the impetus that keeps you committed to your program on that day when you may want to not go for your walk/jog/to the gym/etc. Also a bit of friendly competition may be the little extra push you need.
Hopefully these ideas help you eliminate the exercise boredom blues!
Here are a few strategies we employ at MOB FIT to keep our members excited and engaged in our program:
1. Workouts are almost never the same, every day brings a new workout. How can one be bored if every workout is different?
2. Workout results are tracked and at the end of the day are shared in our private Facebook group. This keeps our members engaged and they get to always see how they are doing compared to prior workouts and to the other members of the group. It is a friendly competition that our members thrive on.
3. We have monthly exercise challenges. This month, for example, the challenge is holding a plank for max time. The members end up having many opportunities to improve on their performance and we begin to notice a "Bannister effect", as one member takes the lead with a better performance others see it and push themselves to get into first. This raises everyone's individual effort and performance and leads to tons of personal records through out the month on each monthly challenge.
These are just a few strategies we employ to kill the boredom.
