Former Old Lyme Cop Accused In Sexual Assault Case
A former Old Lyme police officer has been charged in a sexual assault at a boat launch.
OLD LYME, CT — A former Old Lyme police officer has been charged in a sexual assault at a boat launch, according to a statement from Connecticut State Environmental Conservation Police.
Jay Rankin, 61, of Old Saybrook, turned himself in to state police in Danielson on Monday. He was charged with third-degree sexual assault, fourth-degree sexual assault, public indecency, second-degree breach of peace, and prohibited activities in limited access areas.
The charges are connected to a July 2023 incident at the Little Pond Boat Launch in Thompson, according to the statement.

His bond was set at $50,000.
In 2022, Rankin had been accused of making racist remarks and charged with misdemeanor breach of peace, though he was not prosecuted, The Day of New London reported. He was on paid leave for nearly a year and a half before he was permitted to retire per the terms of an agreement with the town of Old Lyme.
