BOE Meeting Tonight On Making Up Excess Snow Days

The Board of Education will be holding a special meeting tonight to discuss shortening February Break vacation for students of the Tolland Public School system. After an already record-breaking snowfall this winter, a number of schools across the state are scrambling to find ways to make up for all the lost time due to snow days.

According to , families of schoolchildren in town were given surveys by the Ledyard Board of Education get their opinion on how to best make up the lost school days. Their choices were to add all snow days to the scheduled end of the calendar year, eliminate four days off April Break or four days off February Break. 

The latter option is one the will be discussing, and public participation is encouraged. The meeting will be held tonight at Tolland High School—that is, if another snow day is not ultimately called today as well.

Last night, nearby towns of Stafford, Vernon and Willington had already announced school closures for today. According to Ellington-Somers Patch, the Ellington Public Schools are also closed, in order for snow to be removed from roofs.

A teacher from Birch Grove Primary School said that yesterday was snow day number nine for the town.

By state law, students must complete 180 school days by June 30. The Tolland Middle School web site posted on Feb. 1 that the last day of the school year has now reached that cutoff point. The school system has no choice but to start cutting back days where it can.

February Break for Tolland schools is currently scheduled for Feb. 21-Feb. 25.
