Car Takes Out Big Chunk of Highway Guardrail in Tolland

State police are blaming the tires on a relatively new car.

TOLLAND, CT — A car that took out a good chunk of guardrail on Interstate-84 Thursday evening was new, but the tires were bad, state police said.

The end result was a 27-year-old Suffield man taking out 200 feet of the barrier on I-84 eastbound, just west of Exit 68, state police said.

The 6:43 p.m. crash was caused by what state police described as "unsafe tires" on a 2016 Ford Fusion driven by Christopher Stein of Susan Drive, Suffield. The car struck the wire rope guardrail off the shoulder and wrecked 200 feet of it, state police said.
