This how-to workshop is free with general admission and will focus on the many untold Civil War stories found in the CHS collections. Using objects, and the soldiers' own words, Rich Malley, Head of Research and Collections at the CHS, will show glimpses of the wartime experiences shared by so many young men during this conflict; men like Stephen Walkley of Southington, Willie Norton of Manchester, and Robert Brodie of Eastford. John Potter, Research Collections Associate, will also present his original research on "The Sixteenth Connecticut and its Imprisonment at Andersonville & Florence Stockades, April 1864 - March 1865." His talk is based on the CHS manuscript collection of unpublished diaries, letters, and journals of the 450 men who endured imprisonment and suffered a 50% mortality rate. Participants are welcome to bring their own family Civil War materials to share with the group and to get advice on avenues for research.
