Student Council Collecting Used Prom Dresses

The council will be collecting dresses on Feb. 24 at the senior center.

Old prom dresses. They're beautiful. They bring back great memories. And for many, they're never worn again after that magical prom night.

Luckily, the student council will put those dresses hanging in the closet to good use.

Tentatively scheduled for February 24, the council will be collecting the used dress donations at . Student council members Samantha Riley, Katherine Jacobs and Cristina Macklem said that the group will have a dress exhange for Tolland High school students and then will donate the extra dresses to the non-profit organization the Princess and the Prom.

Student council advisor Patricia Micari said that she thought the dress drive was a great idea as soon as Riley found the Princess and the Prom group online and introduced it to the council.

"We like to encourage them to bring ideas that are good for the community," she said. "A lot of people spend a ton of money on prom dresses, and to encourage kids to share with others is a good thing."

According to the Princess and the Prom website, dresses donated to the organization should generally be no older than five years old. They do not need to be washed; Best Cleaners dry cleans the dresses donated to the group, according to the site.

Larger size dresses are needed, and accessories such as shoes, jewelry and purses are also accepted.

The collection date is scheduled for February 24 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at .
