Tolland County Officials: No Open Burning This Weekend

TOLLAND COUNTY — Even with rain in the forecast from Saturday night into Sunday, yard work will likely be on the do-do lists for many Tolland County residents.

So for those tempted to burn excess brush fire officials have issued a stern warning — don't even think about it.

"What rain might fall will only skim the surface, so the ground will remain dry," Tolland Fire Chief and public safety supervisor John Littell said.

Signs have been posted at fire stations all over Tolland asking residents to heed the advice.

The forest fire danger level has been high all week and the state Department of Energy and Environmental says it is moderate heading into the weekend. Vernon Fire Marshal Dan Wasilewski said to stay conservative.

"We've had several incidents this week, so that makes the risk high to me," he said. "You need to remember, it only takes one spark. The ground is still dry. Just don't burn any brush."

Though wood stoves are getting quiet, fire pits, smokers and charcoal grills can also be culprits this time of year, Wasilewski said.

Wasilewski and Littell said the same precautions are in order.

"Dispose of ashes in a metal bucket and soak the ashes with water before dumping them outside," they said.

Both added, "If you see a fire, call 911 immediately."
