Tolland Education Foundation provides grant for Traversing Wall Protective Matting at Middle School

Just in time for the end of the school year, the Tolland Education Foundation awarded a $3,203.66 grant to the Tolland Middle School Physical Education department for a protective matting system to be used with a rock climbing/traversing wall. The traversing wall, which was already purchased by the school, is expected to be installed during the summer months. In order for the students to use the wall in the Physical Education program, the protective matting system was necessary. Students Matthew and William Pater recognized the need and worked with physical Education Teacher Tonya McDermott to write the grant. According to principal Dan Uriano, “The importance of an active lifestyle is paramount to a healthy life, and physical wellbeing promotes a sense of self, personal ownership and confidence in students. Tolland Middle School is moving away from the traditional modality of “gym class” where students participate in the traditional team sports and integrating more high interest fitness-based, life-long activities. With the funding of the mats, the students will have a new and exciting activity that could promote a life-long healthy hobby.”
