STORRS, CT — An assistant coach with the University of Connecticut football program is facing several charges and is accused in a warrant of being uncooperative with state police after an August crash in Mansfield, state police said.

On Sunday Brooks Jenkins, 31, who resides in Vernon, surrendered on a warrant to face charges that include failure to renew a registration, evading responsibility, failure to take a sobriety test, driving without a license and interfering with police.

He posted a $35,000 bond and is due in Rockville Superior Court on Oct. 13, state police records show. Jenkins came to UConn from Toledo with the recent coaching change.

The crash took place at 10:23 p.m. on Aug. 27 on Grant Hill Road in Tolland, while Jenkins was leaving a gathering at an area restaurant and heading to his Vernon apartment, according to a warrant.

State police found Jenkins' smoking vehicle with expired Ohio plates unoccupied with its airbags deployed near a tree at the scene according to a warrant. A witness identified Jenkins as the driver via his UConn football program biography, according to a warrant.

A subsequent canine track was not successful, according to a warrant.

A witness from the neighborhood told state police Jenkins smelled of alcohol when he approached Jenkins at the scene after hearing a loud "bang," according to a warrant. After Jenkins said he lost control of the vehicle, the witness turned away briefly and said Jenkins "was gone" when he turned back around, according to a warrant. Jenkins was on a phone in a panicked state when the neighbor first approached the scene, according to a warrant.

A reference to Jenkins drinking "five or six" hours earlier at a "tavern" was also mentioned in a warrant.

Another witness account indicated Jenkins had been drinking at a restaurant in Coventry, according to a warrant. Receipts from the establishment were obtained by state police, according to a warrant.

A ride was attempted to be secured for Jenkins, but it was not successful, according to restaurant staffers' testimony referenced in a warrant.

A UConn spokesman referred the matter to the athletics department, which had yet to release a statement late Monday morning.
