Tolland Explains Temporary Sign Rules

The Planning and Zoning Commission is seeking to educate business owners about sign requirements.

Temporary signs can be an easy way for businesses to advertise a product or service or to let the community know when a new business is now open. Tolland’s zoning regulations allow temporary signs if the business applies for a zoning permit and the sign meets certain requirements. The intent is to balance advertising needs with aesthetic concerns and with safety issues that arise when signs block the view of drivers or end up in the road.

The Tolland Planning and Zoning Commission is launching an educational campaign to let businesses know about these requirements. Most businesses will receive a mailing providing details about these requirements and asking for voluntary compliance during a grace period. After a grace period, the Commission has directed staff to begin enforcing the rules.

Beginning in late September, enforcement will focus on temporary business signs that are located immediately along a street since they are actually in the public right-of-way. Enforcement staff will remove and store those signs at Town Hall for one month.

In November, any remaining temporary business signs that do not have a zoning permit will be considered illegal. The continued display of the signs without approval can result in a fine. The Commission encourages business owners to discuss their signage needs with town staff so fines can be avoided.
