Like with any town, there are always some issues that cause more discussion than others, but the good thing about Tolland is that with everyone’s input the end result is usually a better product.

We are quickly approaching what will be a very challenging budget season. I would encourage all residents to become knowledgeable about the process and attend meetings, when possible and if not able, review information that will be posted on our Web site.

Residents often ask what they can do to help the town. Three immediate things come to mind:

  1. Volunteer to serve on one of the many Boards or Commissions of the Town. There are always vacancies and what better way to give back than with your expertise and time. Vacancies are posted on our website.
  2. When traveling through town obey the speed limits and by you doing so those behind you will do so as well. We receive constant complaints from residents about excessive speed in Town and with a limited Resident Trooper program it is not possible to have speed enforcement on a regular basis on over 100 miles of road. Therefore we need your help, especially in the Tolland Green Area and around our school locations particularly on Old Post Road. Like we have mobilized for other issues, wouldn’t it be great to put road safety on the front burner and encourage friends and family members to drive within the speed limit. This issue is within our ability to control without having to use the valuable resources of our State Trooper to sit on the side of the road with a radar gun issuing tickets.
  3. Recycle, we receive revenue for everything put in the blue tote and we pay money for everything disposed in the green tote. So blue saves money, green costs money. Let’s try to increase our rate of recycling which has stagnated the last several years and in so doing help the environment and help to make the Solid Waste Program in Town more affordable.

Like always if anyone has any suggestions regarding improvements to Town services or greater efficiencies, please do not hesitate to contact me at swerbner@tolland.org.
