Tolland Teachers Could Face Layoffs in 'Worst Case' Budget Scenario

Potential layoffs were discussed at a meeting on Monday.

TOLLAND, CT — The worst-case scenario from potential losses in state aid to the local school system is laying off a percentage of teachers greater than the sales tax.

And that is 10 percent, according to a preliminary outline discussed on Monday night at a joint meeting of the Board of Education and Town Council designed to deal with a state budget that has not yet been approved. The meeting took place at the high school auditorium and live streamed online.

The sales tax is 6.35 percent.

Superintendent of Schools Walter Willett said the discussions were meant to be a source of input toward making "informed decisions" on local expenditures once the state budget is set.

And the worst case scenario would be an impact to 35-to-40 educators, Willett said. Class sizes could also increase, he said

The minutes of the meeting will be posted on the school system website once reviewed and approved.

He said layoff notices would have to go out next week.
