Tolland Vets Have the Official Task of Caring for UConn Mascot

Taking care of the UConn mascot is a special task for both alums.

STORRS, CT — Two Tolland veterinarians are now the official doctors of University of Connecticut royalty — Jonathan the Husky mascot.

Scott and Heidi Morey of the Fenton River Veterinary Hospital learned of the appointment just recently after Jonathan's previous personal doctors relocated from Coventry. And yes, they are both UConn graduates

“I never imagined in a million years that we’d get such a cool opportunity,” said Scott Morey, whose added his first memory of the UConn mascot was at a soccer game when he was in elementary school.

He said he had hoped to draw patients from the university, just about 7 miles away along Route 195, but added getting the top dog was special.

“We hoped when we opened the practice that we’d have UConn people coming in, but never would have believed we’d get to care for the Jonathans,” said Morey, a Tolland native.

Scott Morey (2006) and Heidi (Claus) Morey (2005) met in local 4-H circles as children while showing cows and started dating while attending UConn.

They later were married and graduated from the veterinary school at Kansas State University and came back to the area in 2014 to open their practice a year later.

UConn officials said as a sponsor, the Fenton River Veterinary Hospital covers the costs of both dogs’ routine checkups and preventative care, while any unusual medical issues are covered by Alpha Phi Omega, the co-ed service fraternity that is responsible for the Jonathans.
