Tolland's First Day of School Delayed Due to Road Conditions
Schools will not be opening on Wednesday, August 31, as was originally scheduled.

Superintendent William Guzman has announced that the Tolland school district will be delaying the first day of school for at least one day. School was scheduled to begin on Wednesday, August 31.
Guzman said that the delay is due to concerns about road conditions. Many Tolland roads are , and Guzman was concerned about the bus route, since many wires and trees are still on the roads.

All of the schools, with the exception of Birch Grove Primary School, have power.
Despite the delay, Birch Grove and Tolland High School still held their meet and greets today.

Incoming freshmen were given their schedules and toured the school to familiarize themselves with the campus.
Tolland High School principal Dominique Fox said that the faculty is ready to adapt to any situation.
"As a school district, we have to be flexible," she said, adding that a cancellation doesn't seem to be much of a change from last year's snow storms.
"It's just a continuation of what happened last year," she said.
At the orientation, Fox encouraged the high school's new class to embrace all the opportunities that the school has to offer.
"I challenge you to be the best class to ever come through THS," she said, before sending students out to see their classrooms.
Students were also gearing up for next year at Birch Grove Primary School. First graders and their families came in to visit their teachers at 1 p.m. and get a feel for their new classrooms.
Principal Thomas Swanson said that the school is still running on generator power. He added that parents can get information from the school on the phone message system and school Web site.
The Tolland EOC reports that 54 percent of the town is without power. More than 20 roads are still closed or blocked.
