It’s been 20 years since that fateful day, yet it still seems like yesterday. Seeing all the remembrance videos and news is still daunting and painful. I’m sure most of you can recall where you were when you heard or saw the attack, it’s a day we will never forget. I remember the phone call while at work in Hartford, I remember sitting in the large auditorium of Aetna and watching everything unfold. I remember the absolute despair and fear I experienced watching those buildings fall. I’ve never had such a visceral fight or flight reaction in my life. I remember standing up and not knowing anything other than I needed to leave. I needed to get my babies and go home where we would be safe.

As I had this reaction, I watched the countless, nameless, faceless hero’s doing the exact opposite of what my body was telling me to do. Not run away but run toward. I watched firefighters, police, EMTs, paramedics, ordinary people run straight into the chaos to help anyone and everyone they could. Hero’s… in the truest sense of the word.
2,977 people died and over 6,000 were injured on that day, including those who are still dying today from physical and mental illness related to the rescue efforts. 344 firefighters, 71 police officers, 55 military personnel. Over 90 countries had citizens perish on 09/11. 2,455 of our nation's sons and daughters died in the ensuing war, 20,722 were injured including those who just perished in Kabul.

Those are the people we honor here today. The victims of this terrorist attack and the brave responders who fought, some giving their lives that day, some continuing to face the terrible mental and physical health-related illness from the rescue efforts, to the individuals who decided to sacrifice their lives to ensure more carnage would not occur, to every single person who played a part in our survival as a nation that day and to those who went to war to ensure the people who conspired against us were brought to justice. We thank you. We honor you.
