A1C Tests Available at Trumbull Health Department

The Trumbull Health Department will be providing A1C tests to residents on Tuesday, September 12 and Friday, September 15, by appointment. The A1C test, also known as the hemoglobin A1C or HbA1c test, is a simple blood test that measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months. It is one of the tests used to diagnose prediabetes and diabetes. The test is administered by the Trumbull Public Health Nurse. Results are available within 10 minutes. Blood pressure screening, height and weight measurements are included. There is no charge for the A1C tests. To schedule an appointment, call the Health Department at 203-452-1030 ext. 0.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects how your body turns food into energy. There are three types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 133 million Americans are living with diabetes or prediabetes. Symptoms of diabetes include:

• Frequent urination, often at night
• Increased thirsty
• Extreme hunger
• Weight loss
• Blurred vision
• Numb or tingling hands or feet
• Tired
• Dry skin
• Sores that heal slowly

Residents should consider getting a baseline A1C test if you are an adult 45 years of age or older, or if you are under 45 years of age and are overweight, and if you have one or more risk factors for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Risk factors include family history, age, race or ethnicity, inactivity, weight, and high blood pressure.
